Here are some important tips to keep in mind when thinking about wallpaper and putting your house for sale:
- The wallpaper that is "in" today is not the same as the wallpaper from the 1980s and 1990s. The patterns, colors and materials used are noticeably different. Just because wallpaper is coming back, the outdated wallpaper on your grandmother's dining room wall is still just that - outdated.
- Many homesellers don't want the hassle of trying to take off old wallpaper. Well, neither do home buyers! And if there are two homes competing for their offer, they will most likely choose the one without the wallpaper.
- Wallpaper is for the interior designer, not the home stager. While an interior designer's job is to create a room that expresses the homeowner's unique style and taste, a home stager's job is to create a room that appeals to as many people as possible. Wallpaper is extremely taste-specific. The wallpaper you may choose is not likely what someone else would choose.
When buyers see wallpaper, they see dollar signs and hassle - something they'd rather not have to deal with in a new home. For these reasons, home stagers are not big fans of wallpaper including the one writing this blog!
