Certainly, some brick fireplaces are more attractive than others. They can add warmth and character, especially in old homes that are intentionally decorated primitively or with a tasteful blend of modern and primitive. Unfortunately, they can also be terribly drab and make an entire room feel dark or outdated. In the latter, I would definitely recommend painting the brick, and to those who fear its "irreversibility", I would ask, "Why would you ever want to go back anyway?!"
When selling your home, painting a drab and outdated brick fireplace can be a very smart move. Buyers will like the modern, clean and light feel of the room. Compared to other homes, yours will be more appealing and memorable. Memorable is good!
